Building Belonging Over Coffee
It starts simply enough — a coffee order, a familiar face behind the counter, a quick exchange before the day takes over. But somewhere between the first cup and the hundredth, something shifts. That's the quiet strength of coffee in a community — the way it reaches past a transaction to build something more real and more human. Neighbours make community. And it happens in the small, steady moments: across a counter, across backgrounds, across the street.
Our 'Brewing What Matters' campaign portraits continue to celebrate the vibrant Smith St family, each one captured on the local streets we call home. Together, they honour those familiar, unhurried moments — the daily rituals and incidental interactions that build belonging between people.
In this second portrait, the lens turns to Will, co-owner of Gladesville Pharmacy, and Ross, founder of Smith Street Coffee Roasters.

We may come from different backgrounds, and work in different industries — but our 11am coffee is something neither of us would miss.
It's not about the caffeine. It's a chance to pause, check in and talk about the realities of running our local businesses. The wins, the hard days, and everything in between.
Because behind the roasting room and the pharmacy counter is something you won't find on a business card - a genuine commitment to the people around us. And that care has a way of spreading — through a neighbourhood that feels a little more known, a little less alone, and stronger for the quiet, everyday ways it's held together.
We may run different businesses, but our belief is shared. When we take care of one another, belonging grows a little stronger for everyone.
More Than a Coffee Roaster
At its heart, Smith St binds together communities and cultures. Real people, real relationships, real connections — coffee in hand — that grow strong over time.
It goes beyond a simple transaction as you buy your morning brew. Its the daily, coffee-held conversations that grow the vibrant communities we love across Sydney.
Chatty baristas and extended families. Neighbours in business. The familiar faces who offer a word of support or help you through a tough day — and the ones you celebrate life's wins with.
These are the people we value most, and the ones we want to shine a light on. They remind us of what we already have around us. And when we come together to brew what matters, we step together towards a better tomorrow.
