Modern Slavery Statement
Voluntary Statement · Sydney · FY2025/26
Our Business and Commitment
Smith St Coffee Roasters (SSCR) is a family-owned roastery and café business based in Sydney. We roast, package, and supply specialty coffee to our own cafés, wholesale partners, retail customers, and online community.
Although our turnover is under $100 million and we are not legally required to lodge a Modern Slavery Statement under the Commonwealth Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth), we have chosen to do so voluntarily. This reflects our values of fairness, respect, and transparency.
We acknowledge that the global coffee supply chain can involve risks of modern slavery, forced labour, and child labour. SSCR is committed to taking practical and meaningful steps to identify, assess, and reduce those risks within our operations and supply chains.
Our Supply Chains
Our supply chains include:
-
Green coffee beans sourced via importers from South America, Africa, and Asia.
-
Equipment and packaging suppliers based in Australia, Europe, and Asia.
-
Service providers supporting our roasting facility and cafés, including cleaning, logistics, waste management, maintenance, and utilities.
While our operations are local to Sydney, aspects of our supply chain extend internationally, particularly in sectors and regions that may present elevated risks.
Key Risks Identified
We recognise that modern slavery risks are more likely to occur in the following areas:
-
Coffee production: Exploitative labour practices at farm or cooperative level.
-
Manufacturing and packaging: Subcontracted production in lower-regulation markets.
-
Logistics and local services: Underpayment or poor conditions for contracted cleaners, warehouse, or transport workers.
Actions Being Taken (FY2025/26)
During this financial year, we will:
-
Introduce a Modern Slavery Policy and Supplier Code of Conduct.
-
Include modern slavery clauses in new supplier contracts where feasible.
-
Map and assess our top suppliers by spend and risk to identify high-risk categories.
-
Deliver training sessions for our staff at the Gladesville roasting facility.
-
Engage with coffee importers to promote traceability and ethical sourcing.
-
Establish a confidential reporting process for modern slavery concerns.
Measuring Progress
We will monitor our effectiveness by tracking:
-
Percentage of Tier 1 suppliers that agree to our Supplier Code of Conduct.
-
Number of high-risk suppliers reviewed and followed up.
-
Staff awareness levels following training.
-
Any reported concerns and the actions taken in response.
Updates on our progress will be shared via our website and in-store communications to maintain transparency with our customers and partners.

This Statement was reviewed by senior management and approved by the Directors of Smith St Coffee Roasters Pty Ltd, Sydney. Ongoing responsibility for compliance and implementation sits with our Founder and Managing Director.
